AI Can Give You the Information. A Coach Builds the Judgment.

Every answer is one search away now. Knowing what to do with it isn’t.

I saw a news story a while back about a company pouring venture money into physical therapy delivered almost entirely through a screen.

One or two therapists overseeing hundreds of patients through web resources, feedback, billing, all automated.

The founder talked about robots in homes and clinics within a couple of decades.

It made me sit with a question every owner in this industry should be asking right now.

The kiosk at Target

Picture a kiosk at Target. You put in your doctor’s script, and it measures your balance, your range of motion, your strength.

It hands you a number. Clean, accurate, instant.

If that kiosk existed tomorrow, what exactly would still require a person in the room.

That same question applies to how you run the business, not just how you treat the patient.

Any owner can now ask an AI tool for a marketing plan, a hiring process, or a read on their financials. If you run a physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, or mental health practice, you’ve probably already tried it.

Information stopped being the valuable part

For most of your career, knowing more than the practice owner next to you was an edge.

That’s changing fast. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant put it plainly in a recent interview: the currency of success is shifting under our feet, and knowing more than everyone else stopped being rare once information became a commodity anyone can pull up in seconds.

Grant argues that human judgment is starting to matter more than raw expertise, now that the expertise itself is so easy to access.

This is exactly the gap coaching has always filled, and it’s only getting wider.

What a coach gives you that a search bar can’t

An AI tool can hand you a generic marketing plan in ten seconds.

It can’t tell you why you’ve ignored the same advice for two years, or which one of the five things on that plan is actually the thing holding your practice back this quarter.

A coach brings exactly that kind of judgment to your specific business. Research from the Institute of Coaching, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, has found that coaching’s real value shows up in the quality of decisions leaders make under pressure, not in any single piece of advice handed over.

Decades of research on how experienced people actually make high-stakes decisions found that expertise shows up as fast, accurate pattern recognition built from thousands of prior cases, Gary Klein’s research on naturalistic decision making has shown.

A coach who has sat across from hundreds of owners in your exact position recognizes your specific pattern faster than you can, and faster than any tool that has only ever seen your data in isolation.

Getting the judgment out of the tools you already use

This asks you to be honest with yourself about what the tools can and can’t give you.

Bring the decision, not just the question

An AI tool answers the question you ask it. A coach questions the decision you’ve already half made.

Bring your actual dilemma into the conversation instead of a polished question, and let a coach push back on the parts you’ve talked yourself past.

Use AI for the draft, use a coach for the call

Let a tool build the first version of a plan, a job posting, a script.

Bring the finished draft to a coach and ask the harder question: is this actually right for my practice, or does it just look right on paper.

Ask for the pattern, not the opinion

Instead of asking a coach what they think, ask what they’ve seen this look like before in other practices.

That’s the piece no tool can offer you. It hasn’t sat in the room for the last one hundred versions of your exact problem.

Bring the same issue back until it’s actually solved

A tool gives you an answer once and moves on.

A coach who already knows your history can tell you when you’re circling the same problem again, dressed up differently.

Start with the decision you’re avoiding

Pick the business decision you’ve been Googling instead of actually making.

If you already work with a coach, bring it to them this week, not the polished version, the real one. If you don’t, that’s exactly the kind of decision worth finding one for.

Freedom By Design, Season Two

Season two of Freedom By Design is out now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. New conversations with practice owners and independent thinkers who are building businesses, and lives, on their own terms.

If something in this piece resonated, the show goes even deeper into the mindset shifts behind it.
