Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit. – Napoleon Hill
Tell me if this sounds familiar: you start the year feeling energized with big ideas for your practice. You tell yourself, this is the year I’m going to, add a new therapist, expand my practice, take a vacation, stop working weekends. [Go ahead, fill in the blank with your goal.]
Then what happens? You get caught up in the day-to-day work of running practice, and somehow you lose your energy and excitement for growth and change. The goals that first inspired you begin to feel depressingly out of reach. That leaves you feeling discouraged, lacking confidence. You beat yourself up for not staying motivated.
Here’s the truth about motivation: it comes and it goes. None of us wake up every single day feeling perfectly motivated and inspired. Fortunately, we don’t need to rely on inspiration or luck of the draw to stay engaged and driven. There are simple practices that will keep you in right mind frame to tackle the high-energy, big-picture and big-idea work that delivers real practice growth.
You have drive—that’s what got you where you are. Here’s how to keep your own natural drive harnessed to get to the next level—and the next one after that.
Use these simple habits to stay goal-driven EVERY DAY:
Focus on goals that mean something to you
You can have all the strategy in the world in place and still not reach your goal. What’s missing? What went wrong? The problem may be with the goal itself. Rather than focusing on what you think you’re supposed to do, what if you focused your goals on what you really want from your practice and your life? Here’s some guidance on how to set goals that are right for you.
Break them down
Have a goal that fires you up? Great. Now you really do need a step-by-step plan to reach that milestone. At Practice Freedom U, we use 90-day sprints to take ambitious, game-changing goals and break them down into meaningful, manageable tasks. Instead of worrying about how to get from A to Z, a 90-day plan will take you one step at a time from A to B to C.
Be a monotasker, not a multitasker
Multitasking is seriously overrated. Scientific research has shown how multitasking makes us less productive, not more. To make the most of your valuable time, and to engage in the deep, concentrated work that gets results, become a monotasker. Organize your daily schedule so you can focus on one significant, high energy activity at a time. You’ll get more done. Your work will also feel more rewarding—and that helps you stay motivated.
Acknowledge your wins
I can’t stress enough how important it is to celebrate incremental progress. PT owners are high achievers with high expectations for themselves and others. We tend to be perfectionists. And as business owners, we’re primed to look for all the things that are going wrong. To reach those big, audacious, transformative goals we need positive feedback along the way. Every week, find a success to celebrate.
Focus on resilience
Achieving goals and growing a successful PT practice have a lot in common. With both, small choices and habits add up to big results over time. A belief in what’s possible is key. So are the ability to learn, absorb feedback, and adapt. A willingness for self-examination and openness to new ideas and new ways of working can make all the difference.
Resilience makes all this possible. Resilience is our ability to weather and adapt to change, uncertainty, and adversity. We tend to put a lot of time and effort into boosting efficiency and productivity. They’re important. But so is resilience—and as business owners, we often don’t give it enough attention. To get you started, here’s a good recent Harvard Business Review article about how resilience helps us manage stress and uncertainty.
