Culture eats strategy for breakfast

Peter Drucker said it well. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

Netflix did a series “You are what you eat”. Our health is directly tied to the food we eat. There is an interesting article in HBR on the impact that food has on us. You can find it here.

Don’t like the way you feel? Look at your diet and the food you eat (tolerate). Given the Standard American Diet (SAD) we all have opportunity to improve.

Culture is like our health, instead of food, it’s the behavior we tolerate. Culture is defined by the amount and quality of the behavior we tolerate.

Frustrated with the culture within your team or business?

Ask yourself some questions:

– Do I tolerate behavior that is not aligned with the values of my business?

– Do I have someone on my team who is a great performer but toxic to the culture?

Simon Sinek has a great video on this topic here.

– Do I lead out in my behavior in modeling the culture I want?

Culture is not as simple as three questions. Neither is our health, but a great place to start is looking at the food we eat.

What are some behaviors you tolerate in your business that need a good review?
