Most Physical Therapy practice owners I talk to (and I talk to A LOT of them) think of themselves as Physical Therapists first and business owners second.
But what about the idea of being an Entrepreneur? For many Physical Therapists, the idea of being an entrepreneur sounds risky, expensive and way out of our comfort zone.
At The Practice Freedom Method, we think about entrepreneurship differently. We know entrepreneurship is accessible to any Physical Therapy practice owner who wants it. In fact, there’s very little difference between being an entrepreneur and being a business owner.
You don’t need to be a technological wizard, or have deep-pocketed financial backing, or an appetite for extreme risk. I had none of those things when I transformed myself from physical therapist to entrepreneur, and my practice from struggling to thriving.
To be an entrepreneur, you need to a few simple qualities found in nearly every Physical Therapy business owner I’ve ever met. You need to be:
- Highly motivated
- Interested in innovation
- Committed to creating positive change in your world
- Relying on your own efforts for your financial well-being

I believe in the entrepreneur next door. I’ve seen hundreds of times over how embracing your inner entrepreneur leads to a more profitable business and a more satisfying, rewarding, purpose-driven life.
At the Practice Freedom Method, this is what we know about entrepreneurs:
Entrepreneurs have a mission. Physical Therapy practice owners who are entrepreneurs know the WHY behind what they’re doing—or are willing to find out. Until you’re sure about the WHY of your business, it’s just about impossible to grow the way you want to.
Entrepreneurs want to play a bigger game. They’re not satisfied with the status quo. They want to deliver PT services more effectively and efficiently, and raise the bar on patient care. They want to expand their reach, connecting with more people who aren’t yet getting the treatment they need. They don’t just want to grow their business, they want to scale it, becoming process-driven rather than people-driven, and enabling that business to run without their constant involvement.
Entrepreneurs care about more than money. Entrepreneurship seeks both profitability and community impact. We all want—and need—to be profitable. But what drives entrepreneurs is a fundamental desire to serve others and make a positive difference in their communities.
Entrepreneurship is a journey, not a destination. At The Practice Freedom Method (and soon to be Practice Freedom U!) we talk about the Evolving Entrepreneur. That’s because true entrepreneurship is an ongoing practice, not a stage in the lifecycle of a business or its owner. Entrepreneurs are always learning, growing, and exploring new and better ways to fulfill their mission.
Recognize yourself in any of these traits? So many Physical Therapy practice owners already have these core characteristics. What they need is a green light to lean into them, and a roadmap for putting them to best use. It is the passion of my working life to give practice owners both.
